How to Calculate a Weighted Grade Average
A weighted grade average gives more importance to categories that count for more of your final grade, like exams, rather than treating every assignment equally. The basic formula
A weighted average multiplies each category score by its weight, adds those results together, and divides by the total of the weights. Written out, it looks like this: weighted average equals the sum of (score times weight) divided by the sum of the weights. If the weights already add up to 100 percent, the division step is unnecessary since the sum of the weighted scores gives you the final percentage directly.
A worked example
Say a class grades homework at 20 percent, quizzes at 20 percent, a midterm at 25 percent, and a final exam at 35 percent. If you scored 90 on homework, 85 on quizzes, 78 on the midterm, and 88 on the final, you would calculate each category's contribution separately: homework contributes 90 times 0.20, which is 18. Quizzes contribute 85 times 0.20, which is 17. The midterm contributes 78 times 0.25, which is 19.5. The final contributes 88 times 0.35, which is 30.8. Adding those four numbers together gives a final weighted grade of 85.3 percent.
Why this differs from a simple average
A simple average of those same four scores, 90, 85, 78, and 88, would come out to 85.25 percent, which happens to land close to the weighted result in this example only because the scores were fairly consistent. If the midterm score had been much lower, say 50 instead of 78, the simple average would drop more sharply than the weighted average would, since the weighted calculation only gives the midterm a 25 percent say in the outcome rather than an equal quarter share with three assignments that might carry different actual weights in the syllabus.
Working backward to find a needed score
The same formula works in reverse when you want to know what score you need on a remaining assignment to reach a target grade. Multiply your target grade by the total weight, subtract the weighted scores you've already earned, then divide by the weight of the remaining assignment. Using the example above, if you wanted a final grade of 90 percent and had already earned 18, 17, and 19.5 from homework, quizzes, and the midterm (54.5 combined), you'd need the final exam to contribute 35.5 out of its 35 percent weight, which works out to just over 101, meaning a 90 percent final grade isn't reachable in this scenario without extra credit.

The most frequent error is treating individual assignments within a category as if they were weighted separately from the category itself, when most syllabi average scores within a category first and only apply the category weight afterward. Another common mistake is using weights that don't sum to 100 percent without dividing by their total, which skews the result. It also helps to double-check whether a syllabus lists weights as percentages or as point totals out of a different scale, since those require slightly different setup even though the underlying formula is the same.
