What are Sun, Moon and Rising positions?

Your Sun, Moon and Rising sign positions — often called your "Big Three" — are calculated from your birth date, time and location using standard astronomical formulas (Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms).

Your Sun sign position is determined from the date of birth using the Western tropical zodiac. Your Moon sign position is calculated from the Moon's ecliptic longitude at your birth moment. Your Rising sign (also called the Ascendant) is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth time and location — computed using Local Sidereal Time, your geographic latitude and the obliquity of the ecliptic.

How this calculator works

The calculator runs three separate astronomical calculations. For the Sun sign, it converts your birth date into an approximate ecliptic longitude for the Sun and maps that onto the 12 tropical zodiac signs, each spanning 30 degrees. For the Moon sign, it estimates the Moon's ecliptic longitude at your birth moment using its orbital period (about 27.3 days) and a reference position, then maps that longitude onto the same 12 signs. For the Rising sign, it computes the Local Sidereal Time at your birth moment and location, then combines that with your latitude and the obliquity of the ecliptic (Earth's axial tilt, about 23.4°) to find which sign was crossing the eastern horizon.

Worked example: the zodiac date ranges

Sun sign is the simplest of the three since it depends only on your birth date, using the standard Western tropical zodiac ranges:

These dates shift by a day in either direction some years since they follow the actual position of the Sun, not a fixed calendar — the calculator above uses the precise astronomical date for your specific birth year rather than these rounded ranges.

Why your Big Three matter

In Western astrology, the Sun sign is described as your core identity and general personality, the sign most people mean when they ask "what's your sign." The Moon sign is described as your emotional inner world — how you process feelings and what makes you feel secure. The Rising sign (Ascendant) is described as the "mask" you present to the world — first impressions and outward style. Together, the three are called your "Big Three" because they're considered the foundation of a birth chart, with dozens of other points (other planets, houses, aspects) built on top of them in a full chart reading.

Accuracy & limitations

Sun sign position is effectively exact, since it only depends on the date. Moon sign position is usually reliable, but the Moon changes sign roughly every two to three days, so if your birth falls close to a sign change, an imprecise birth time could shift the result. Rising sign is the most time-sensitive: the Ascendant moves through the full zodiac roughly once every 24 hours, shifting about one degree every four minutes. An unknown or slightly wrong birth time — or an unaccounted-for hour of daylight saving — can therefore change your Rising sign entirely. For the most reliable result, use the exact time from your birth certificate.

What this calculator does not include

• Full birth chart — this covers Sun, Moon and Rising only, not the other planets, houses or aspects that make up a complete astrological chart.
• Sidereal zodiac — this uses the Western tropical zodiac, the system most commonly used in Western astrology. Vedic/sidereal astrology uses a different system that can place the same birth data in a different sign entirely.
• Scientific validation — as noted above, this is for entertainment and informational purposes; astrological interpretations aren't scientifically validated, even though the underlying celestial position calculations are standard astronomy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sun, Moon, and Rising the same as a full birth chart?

Not exactly. Your Big Three show where the Sun, Moon and Ascendant were positioned at your birth. A full birth chart maps every planet, house and aspect.

What's the difference between Sun, Moon, and Rising?

Sun position = based on your birth date. Moon position = birth date + approximate time. Rising (Ascendant) = exact birth time + location.

How accurate is this calculator?

Sun position is essentially exact. Moon position is accurate to a fraction of a degree using standard astronomical formulas. Rising position is highly time-sensitive — see the accuracy section above.

What if I don't know my exact birth time?

You'll still get an accurate Sun position. Without a time we default to noon, which gives a reasonable Moon position estimate but an unreliable Rising position — check your birth certificate for the exact time if possible.

Does this work for people born outside the US and UK?
